How to keep your smartened-up home safe from hackers

Thursday, January 11, 2018

More people are getting voice-activated speakers and other smart devices for convenience and security. But doing so could also be giving hackers a key to their homes.
. .
Many devices from reputable manufacturers have safeguards built in, but those can't guarantee against hacks. Gadgets from startups and no-name brands may offer little or no protection.
.
. Before buying one, here are some risks to assess.
.
. Listening in
.
Speakers with built-in microphones are increasingly popular. Devices such as Amazon 's Echo and Google Home let people check the weather or their personal calendar with simple voice commands. Beyond that, many smart TVs and TV streaming devices now have voice-activated functions, often for playback controls and video search. Many newer toys also come with microphones so kids can talk to them and get canned responses.
. .
Many of these devices are constantly listening for your commands; when they receive them, they connect to corporate servers to carry them out. What if you're having private conversations at home? Are they getting sent over the internet, too?
. . In some cases, sound recordings will only leave home when you trigger the device. You might have to speak a command phrase like ``OK Google'' or press a button to get the device's attention. Check before buying to make sure a product includes such safeguards.
. . Some gadgets go further. Smart speakers, for instance, typically have a mute button to disable the microphone completely. Amazon says its mute function involves disconnecting the circuit, so that hackers cannot override the intent.
. .
But there's no easy way for consumers to verify manufacturer promises, such as Amazon's assertion that the Echo never transmits recordings to the cloud unless it's been activated. That's where it helps to stick with reputable brands, as their reputations are at stake if they're caught in a lie. Bigger companies can also quickly fix security holes that crop up.
.
. Missteps are still possible, even with reputable brands. One of the WikiLeaks disclosures alleged that the CIA commandeered some Samsung smart TVs as listening devices even when the TV appeared to be off. And beware of internet-connected toys , as manufacturers frequently rush their products to market, sometimes skimping on privacy features in the process. (You can check online to see if other parents or consumer groups have identified problems.)
. .
One more catch: Voice commands sent over the internet are typically stored indefinitely to help manufacturers personalize their services (and, potentially, advertisements). These voice snippets may include music or conversations in the background. They can be sought in lawsuits and investigations. Reputable brands let you review and delete your voice history; be sure to do so regularly.
.
. Watching you
. Online security cameras such as the Cam IQ , from Google sibling company Nest, let you check in on your pets or kids when you're not home. They also typically store video online, so you can see whether your housekeeper actually cleaned the kitchen last week. Some services routinely send video to online storage; others do so only when triggered by a sound or motion.
. . Again, reputable brands are likely to take security seriously, but no system is perfect.
. .
If you want to be very careful, you might want to turn the camera to face the wall when you're home. You might also want to turn off the microphone, since it could capture background conversations. Or just unplug the camera altogether ... though you'll also have to remember to reconnect it when you leave.
. . Along similar lines, consider covering up the front-facing camera on your laptop with opaque tape unless you need it regularly for video chats. Laptops aren't supposed to send video unless you activate an app that needs it, but malware has been known to activate the camera remotely.
. . Digital trials
. Smart locks let you unlock doors with an app, so you can let in guests even when you're not home. Burglars might try to hack the system, though it's often easier for them to just break a window.
. .
Some rental properties are also turning to smart locks to control access. When you move out, the landlord can automatically disable your digital key. But these systems also let landlords track your whereabouts and those of your guests. If you create a guest key that's used daily, for instance, the landlord might suspect you have an unauthorized occupant.
.
. Even if you own the home, these keys can leave a digital trail. In a child-custody dispute, for instance, your ex might subpoena the records to learn that you've been staying out late on school nights.

How to View and Delete All Your Windows 10 Activity History

Windows 10 collects and saves your activity history both on your computer and to the cloud, from browsing history to location information to everything in between. Luckily Microsoft makes it easy to see all the data that is being stored, and also makes it easy to delete it.

What Data Does Windows 10 Track?
The data that Windows collects includes:

Edge browsing history

    Bing search history

    Location data (if it's enabled)
    Cortana voice commands
If you use Microsoft's HealthVault or the Microsoft Band device, any activity collected through that service is also stored. Microsoft says it collects this data in order to provide you with more relevant results and content that is of interest to you.

How to Delete Windows 10 Activity History

You can easily see what data has been stored and how to delete it. There are two ways you can clear your activity history: either directly within your computer's settings or in your Microsoft cloud account. To do it on your computer, do the following:

Go to Settings > Privacy > Activity History.
Under Clear Activity History, click the Clear button.
If you want to prevent Windows from continuing to collect this data, under Collect Activities toggle off the option: Let Windows collect my activities.
How to View Windows 10 Activity History

Go to Settings > Privacy > Activity History and click Manage my activity info.
A browser window will open up, and you may be prompted to log into your account if you aren't already logged in. You can also reach this page by going to account.microsoft.com/privacy/activity-history.

Here, you should see your data divided into the categories listed above: Browsing History, Search History, Location Activity, Voice Activity, Cortana's Notebook, and Health Activity. You can view and clear data in each section, by clicking the clear data button that corresponds with each section, and click the button confirming that you want to delete it.

You can also click on the Activity History tab to will view a full list of all data types: voice, search, browsing history, and location information. Microsoft also makes it easy to filter down to each category by clicking on it.

How to block a number on iPhones and Android phones

With technology taking over all our lives, it has become much easier to stay in touch. Activities like writing letters, standing in queues to call someone sound awfully primitive in this time and age. With smartphones, you don't have to wait to speak to the people you want anymore. While that is great for the loved ones in your lives, what about the ones you don't want? All of us receive many spam calls on a daily basis and no one we know looks forward to them. If you're looking to escape these calls, here is a quick guide on how to block a number on your smartphone:
    .
. Block a number on Android:
    .
. * Open the phone app and go to call history
    .
. * Go to the number you wish to block and long press on it
    .
. * You will see a drop-down menu with basic shortcut options
    .
    . * Select Block number
    . .
    * You will see a confirmation message specifying that "you will no longer receive calls or texts from this number."
    . .
    * Tap on block and the number will be blocked.
    .
. In order to see the list of numbers blocked on your Android phone, open phone app> Tap on the three dots on the top right corner > Go to settings > Call blocking . Here you will find the list of the blocked number and if you wish to remove a contact from here, you can simply click on the cross against that number.
    .
. Block a number on iOS:
. . * Open the phone app and go to call history
    .
. * Go to the number you wish to block and press information
    .
. * Scroll down and tap on 'Block this caller'
    . .
    * Tap on block and the number will be blocked.
    .
. If you wish to see the list of numbers blocked on your iOS device, go to Settings> Tap on Phone> Blocked.

How to get Android 8.0 Oreo look on any smartphone

    Wednesday, January 10, 2018

    edin
Google launched its latest version of Android OS, 8.0 Oreo in the last quarter of 2017. Many OEMs have already started rolling it out to their devices. While different OEMs have their own user interface layered on the Android OS, Pixel and Nexus smartphones carry pure Android UI, which is simple and clutter-free.
    . .
Motorola and Nokia too use stock Android but that is not as vanilla as the ones found in Pixel and Nexus devices. If you are using one of the smartphones from the OEMs and you want to experience how Android Oreo feels like in your device, follow these steps. It's really easy.
    .
    .
Step 1 - Go to 'Settings'
    .
. Step 2 - Search for 'Unknown Sources' and allow the device to download apps from unknown sources.
    .
. Step 3 - Go to GitHub page - https://github.com/amirzaidi/Launcher3/releases from the smartphone.
    .
. Step 4 - Search for 'Rootless Pixel Launcher 2.1' and tap on 'Launcher3-aosp-debug.apk'
    .
. Step 5 - Download the apk file.
    . .
Step 6 - Once downloaded, tap on the home button to reach the home screen.
    . .
Step 7 - Tap on 'Always' when a prompt is shown for the Launcher3 app.
    .
. Step 8 - Generally you'll be done here. However, in some cases you would manually need to enter the settings page, search for the launcher and change it to Launcher3.
    . .
Once done, you will see the same translucent app dock that can be scrolled up to access the drawer. The pill-shaped Google search button is also present at the top corner and swiping from left to right will open the personalised Google Now cards, similar to what we have seen in stock Android devices.
. . Furthermore, you can also see the app shortcuts and notification dots seen, features that come as a part of Android 8.0 Oreo.
    .
. It is easy to uninstall the app as well. You can simply navigate to the 'Apps' section in the 'Settings' and tap on 'Uninstall' to remove the app. The home screen launcher will switch back to what was there as a default.

Man United's Romelu Lukaku seeks legal advice over 'voodoo' claim

Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku is set to seek legal advice over claims by Everton's majority shareholder that he was driven to leave the club by "voodoo."
Farhad Moshiri told Everton shareholders at a meeting on Tuesday night that Lukaku was ready to sign a new deal at Goodison Park before receiving a "voodoo message," passed on by his mother, that he should sign for Chelsea. Lukaku moved to United in a £75 million deal in the summer, despite interest from Stamford Bridge.
A spokesman for the 24-year-old told the BBC: "Romelu's decision had nothing to do with voodoo.
"He distances himself from these beliefs and this statement and will now see what judicial steps can be taken in relation to them.
"Romelu is very catholic and voodoo is not part of his life or his beliefs. He simply had no faith in Everton and no confidence in Mr Moshiri's project. That is why he did not want to sign on any condition.
"He wanted to make the next step in his career and wanted the security to be able to leave."
Moshiri, who owns a 49.9 percent stake in Everton, told the club's AGM he offered to make Lukaku the highest paid player in the club's history before the Belgian's U-turn.
He said: "His agent went to Finch Farm to sign the contract.
"Then somehow during the meeting, Romelu called his mother and said she was on a pilgrimage to Africa and had seen some sort of voodoo message that said he had to sign for Chelsea.
"Last summer we offered him a better deal than Chelsea, whatever they offered we matched but he just didn't want to stay. "If I tell you what we offered him you wouldn't believe it."

Philippe Coutinho off to Barcelona, but Liverpool may not struggle for goals

Philippe Coutinho off to Barcelona, but Liverpool may not struggle for goals
Many ex-Liverpool players work in the media. On the whole, Alan Hansen, Jamie Carragher and ESPN FC's own Steve Nicol have been respected, even when critical.
They all had fairly successful careers themselves. If they gave opinions that didn't consist of fawning to recent managers or players, it was largely accepted, because not only were their views valid, they were believed to have the best interest of the club at heart.
That hasn't been the case this week with Danny Murphy, who irritated numerous fans with his views. His comparison of Naby Keita to Jordan Henderson led some to believe he'd not seen enough of the Leipzig midfielder -- on his way to Anfield in the summer -- to form a rational opinion.
It was his take on Liverpool's lacking a proper goal scorer that really ignited the ire of many: "To win the Premier League, you have to have a 20-goal-a-season player, and Liverpool don't have one."
Supporters were quick to point out that Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino already had 38 goals between them and the season's barely halfway through. Despite Sadio Mane's indifferent form this season, he also reached 13 goals last season despite missing an awful lot of football.
It is perhaps testament to the brilliant start Salah has made to his Liverpool career that people can't quite believe it is happening, or see it as a one-off he cannot repeat.
What regular watchers of the Reds know is that he has missed almost as many clear-cut chances as he's converted. Something in Jurgen Klopp's approach to football is clearly agreeing with Salah. Will the Egyptian keep going at this exceptional rate? It seems unlikely, but then so does the idea that he will soon begin to struggle badly.
Philippe Coutinho was sold to Barcelona, so unless Liverpool replace him with another exceptional talent, there will be no more references to their "Fab Four" forwards.
It should still be obvious to anyone that Klopp's chosen method of play is unlikely to rely heavily upon one man, even one as prolific as Salah.
In their 31 competitive games so far this season, the Reds have amassed an outstanding 81 goals. It's quite myopic to suggest any deficiencies stem from a lack of goals.
Liverpool's style also has an impact on players who would normally be considered true strikers. Numerous attempts to incorporate the talents of Daniel Sturridge into the system have fallen flat -- so much so that the England man is now considered surplus to requirements and favourite to move elsewhere.
Divock Origi did have one scoring streak last season, lasting five games, but is now out on loan to Wolfsburg, and few expect him to return. Dominic Solanke has been given a few opportunities in the first team but hasn't scored yet. That might be down to youth and inexperience. Klopp might believe he's been unlucky and has time on his side to develop. Nobody expects Danny Ings to play any future role in the first team.
If there is any problem at all with Liverpool's forward line, it's that there is no logical substitute for Firmino, whose unselfish yet creative style is hard to replicate via the players already at Klopp's disposal.
Nicol's more sensible view of Klopp's predicament centred on accepting that Liverpool have few problems scoring goals and therefore some of the Coutinho fee would be better used helping recent signing Virgil van Dijk shore up gaps at the back.
He cited AC Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma as one of the players Klopp needed to snap up with the Coutinho money. Few believe the whole fee will wend its way into the German's hands, but at least Nicol recognises there is little need for Murphy's "20-goal man" up front.
Liverpool fans are also worried about an FA investigation into remarks Firmino might have made to Everton's Mason Holgate during the 2-1 FA Cup win last week. The moral issue takes precedence here, of course, but there would be a practical problem if the Brazilian were found guilty. Firmino has become an essential part of Liverpool's attacking play -- some might claim even more important than Coutinho.
Klopp still has enough options for the attacking midfield roles, with Adam Lallana coming back from injury and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain getting more games now.
If Klopp could find another player more like Firmino -- who contributes so much and has improved his finishing quite a bit -- then by all means get him. Most supporters, however, believe Klopp needs to strengthen in other areas before considering another forward.
